Have you heard of ChatGPT yet? Many are concerned it will replace Google and eliminate the need for SEO. However, we—and many others—believe there are countless opportunities for Open AI and search engine optimization services to complement each other.

What is ChatGPT?

By the end of 2022, OpenAI launched Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT). The software is meant to act as an AI chatbot that can engage in human-like conversations, and judging by user examples, it does. The tone it uses is friendly, helpful, and as human as an AI platform can be.

ChatGPT can generate content that is detailed, and answer almost any question or respond to any command. There are some drawbacks, though, but more on that later. Basically, whether a user wants a poem written, coding fixed, or an essay reviewed, ChatGPT can do it. Here is a more extensive list of its capabilities:
  • Writing code, helping fix it, and explaining how it was wrong
  • Answering questions
  • Writing poems and short stories
  • Providing explanations
  • Translating text
  • Correcting grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Simplifying, summarizing, or paraphrasing text
  • Generating ideas
  • Providing SEO support with metadata
ChatGPT is still learning and growing. It comes with some drawbacks and doesn’t always perform the way a user hopes. But it does do well with most queries, doing more than just answering a question, but furthering the conversation with suggestions and explanations.

Users have seen that if their question hasn’t been answered or their problem hasn’t been solved, they can continue to converse with the ChatGPT that will use the information in past threads to continue reaching a solution or answer.

While the tone is overall human, there are some human aspects only people can provide. AI only goes so far.

Using artificial intelligence for SEO

With the advanced capabilities of ChatGPT, some are worried it will take over SEO. However, due to the obstacles Open AI faces and the expertise of SEO specialists, there is definitely room for AI in SEO.

ChatGPT drawbacks

Its responses might not always be accurate. It functions based on a database of information that isn’t connected to the internet. So the information provided might not always be the most accurate, especially given it’s an interaction between AI and humans, so some meaning may get lost in translation.

ChatGPT can’t answer questions based on current events because, right now, it only has information relevant before 2021. ChatGPT wouldn’t be the solution to topical questions.

If a user isn’t getting the information they’re looking for and they continue to chat with this AI software, there’s a higher chance they’ll run into duplicate information. If ChatGPT is struggling to provide the answer or information a user is looking for, it might fall back on information it’s already shared.

ChatGPT, as human as it is, can’t replicate the nuances of human behavior. Humans can use humor, references, fact-checking, and personalization to provide the best content to others. But Open AI is limited to the database on which it’s informed. Further, Google’s algorithms can mark AI-generated content as spam so it isn’t necessarily an avenue for people to make quick content and post it.

The benefits of artificial intelligence for SEO

While it’s possible to have ChatGPT create content, based on its drawbacks, it isn’t smart to use it. However, it can be used to generate topic ideas and blog headings for those who need some support crafting content.

It can also find keywords related to an inputted keyword and offer both short and long-tail keyword suggestions. But use this only as an additional resource to keyword research because it can’t access keyword data like difficulty and volume.

ChatGPT can help craft metadata based on the chosen keywords, and while it’s not a good idea to take content directly from the chat’s results, it’s a great place to draw inspiration.

In short, there’s no need to worry about ChatGPT taking away all of the SEO roles. It’s actually a great resource to use to implement AI in SEO. Consider it another helpful resource, like keyword research tools, or an SEO services agency.
